about

Dedicated to my loving Mother, Kathleen Ann Bogie, for her 80th Birthday, December 29th, 2020.

Clarinet Concert For You Vol 2 was broadcast and recorded live once every morning between Sunday, March 22 and Saturday, March 29. They are the first 7 recordings we made in the long running series. After a few concerts, friends suggested we record the performances. In these early clarinet concerts, you can hear that we were using the music to calm ourselves as the reality of the global pandemic hit New York City with ferocity. We heard sirens from our window several times an hour at all hours of the day - this music was thrown into a sonic field that was heavy with fear and anxiety. Friends were spending hours every day on social media which only heightened the onslaught of rapid thoughts that created a city wide - and world wide - feeling of slow terror. We put these concerts up on Instagram to ground ourselves, and our community, with simple music that could speak to the condition we all felt, while possibly breaking up peoples feed with some space and breath. Each morning Karyn would set up the room to look right and I would perform for her and for whomever tuned in as she filmed it from my phone. Her phone provided the drone app which we blue toothed through a little speaker. You can hear doors opening and the occasional conversation. Needles to say it was a technical system vulnerable to blips, and as we continued the series, we improved many things including the fidelity. Listening through the concerts across 6 months of the series, there is also improvement in the clarinet playing department, but that is be expected and I’d like to think on some level the barren trees of late Winter set up the flowing beauty of Spring into Summer, and it is ok to sound a little rusty. These performances captured something that we hope can prove useful to you in your lives.

Special thanks to Jeremy Black for mixing and mastering these recordings - his ears brought this project to the finish line, and extra special thanks to Karyn Starr for producing and inspiring these concerts. Thank you to everyone who tuned in and completed the collective circle.

Note:
For our drone we used a wonderful app called iTanpura which is designed for practicing classical music. I have been practicing with the app for a few years in order to deepen my understanding of tonality and intonation. No claim is made here to approach the sensitivity and sophistication of the Indian classical music tradition, to which I remain only a humble admirer of. For that matter, no claim is made here to even be in tune. This music is simple and basic music from my heart, played at time of hunger and need for the spiritual warmth of vibration and melody. For our sixth concert, I created a drone using the Oberheim 0B-6 synthesizer.
