Lovingly dedicated to Gary Onstad, my first clarinet teacher, who introduced me to the deep truths about music and gifted me with a model for passion and devotion across genres. His love for music lit a fire in my heart. Thank you for showing me that there is something beyond us that music points towards.
By the middle of April, 2020, we were receiving drones from friends from all over the map. We had to start writing things down to keep track of what drone we would use when. Early on, we settled on doing one key every morning, each day moving up a key along the chromatic scale. Patterns emerged within and between pieces - and the character of the series took shape over many daily concerts.
I am deeply grateful to the artists who contributed the drones: Sam Cohen, Tim Kuhl, E Dan, Scotty Hard, Spencer Zahn, and Peter M. Murray. Their sense of space and ambience gave me inspiration and room to move and create. All of these pieces were performed live and streamed from my bedroom, most often in the morning. In moments you can hear the clarinet waking up and yawning, rustling and chatting off mic, and even birds from outside the window. All of this is part of the music. These pieces contain an anonymous intimacy that I had never experienced before in a musical context.
I am also indebted to the listeners that tuned in for the broadcasts - which were never announced or scheduled for any specific time. We just went live when we were ready each morning and friends appeared online to join us, completing the circle of communication and making the experience whole.
When putting together Volume 3, we reviewed over 70 concerts for the collection. Having experienced these actual moments throughout the Spring, I lacked the personal objectivity to choose and arrange the particular performances. My oldest friend in this life, first bandmate, and lifelong collaborator, Zachary Mastoon (aka Caural) stepped in to lend me his golden ears. He poured through hours of recordings and offered me detailed notes and ideas, followed by rounds of mixing notes. I could not have completed this work without him, and he has kept the music as our guiding star. I am incredibly grateful to him for lending us his gifts, and sharing this intimate work with him felt a natural extension of our relationship. Thank you, Zak!
